Apology from Abia Lawmaker Following Assault on Bolt Driver
After facing backlash for an assault on a Bolt driver, an Abia lawmaker has issued an apology, emphasizing the need for accountability and respect for all individuals.
Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives who was involved in an incident where he assaulted a Bolt driver delivering a package to him, has issued a public apology.
Ikwechegh acknowledged that his conduct fell short of the standards expected from a public official.
On Monday, he issued a public apology stating, “As a public servant, I recognize the trust my constituents and the Nigerian people place in me. My conduct did not meet those expectations, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
He expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment his actions had caused Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public.
He further affirmed his collaboration with the Nigerian Police, committing to assist in their investigation and maintain accountability.
As Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, a Member of the House of Representatives, I want to address a troubling incident that recently took place at my home. A video has emerged showing me mistreating an Uber driver who was delivering a waybill for me. I sincerely apologize for my conduct and recognize that it was inappropriate and unworthy of someone in public office.
As a public servant, I understand the trust my constituents and the Nigerian people have placed in me. Regrettably, my behavior did not meet their expectations, and for that, I am genuinely sorry. I acknowledge that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver involved, as well as to my constituents and our nation overall.
The statement read: “I want to assure the public of my full cooperation with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure justice is served and those responsible are held accountable.”
He also commended the Nigeria Police Force for enforcing the law and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
He expressed his gratitude for the quick condemnation of his actions by both his party and the Nigerian Police, highlighting their shared dedication to upholding the law and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Ikwechegh mentioned that he was promptly taking measures to tackle the root causes of the incident.
I am pursuing professional counseling to make sure this behavior is not repeated. Furthermore, I plan to participate in community service initiatives aimed at fostering respect, empathy, and understanding.
Nevertheless, he urged all Nigerians to come together in promoting a culture of respect, tolerance, and understanding.
“We need to collaborate in creating a society where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope you’ll join me on this path toward healing and growth,” Ikwechegh stated.
In a video that gained widespread attention on Monday, the upset driver, Abuwatseya, captured the altercation with Ikwechegh at the lawmaker’s residence in Maitama, Abuja.
The video depicted the clearly enraged lawmaker repeatedly hitting and insulting the driver, supposedly because the driver had requested him to come out to receive a snail delivery.
He also threatened to make the driver “disappear” without having to deal with any repercussions.
However, the incident has sparked public outcry, with many criticizing his actions.
After the incident, Ikwechegh was called in by the police for questioning at their Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
The police also criticized the lawmaker for tarnishing the reputation of Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun by challenging the driver to contact him after slapping him.
