Ikenga Ugochinyere said that if the APC’s approved candidates lacked ability, he would have opposed them.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), which is now in power, has approved the zoning scheme for the 10th National Assembly’s major positions, and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has put its support behind it.
Ikenga Ugochinyere, the CUPP spokesman and member-elect, said at a conference in Abuja that he would have led an opposition against the APC-endorsed candidates as he did in 2015 if it weren’t for their ability, competence, and character.
The member-elect noted that the Senate Presidency had been held by the North for the previous 16 years and said that justice and equality demanded that a ranking senator from the South, particularly the South-South, fill the position.
He said that other high-ranking senators from the South, like as Orji Kalu, Osita Izunaso, and Patrick Ndubueze, should be taken into consideration rather than someone from somewhere else totally if someone were to decide to oppose Senator Godswill Akpabio’s candidacy for office for whatever reason.
In addition, Ugochinyere stated that after speaking with all of his colleagues who had expressed interest in running for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the soon-to-be-established 10th National Assembly, he had come to the conclusion that Tajudeen Abass and Ben Kalu were the best people for the jobs.
He insisted that they both had experience, citing the fact that they had both sponsored several laws in the Ninth NASS, over 20 of which had been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, 63 other members-elect from opposition parties share this viewpoint and have a similar vision for the tenth NASS.
