APC Secures Victory in 16 Out of 18 Local Government Chairmanship Seats in Ondo
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 16 out of 18 local government chairmanship seats in Ondo State, further solidifying its political dominance in the region.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently in power, has secured victory in 16 out of the 18 chairmanship positions during the local government elections in Ondo State.
Joseph Aeemo, the Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), announced this on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Akure.
He pointed out that although the rescheduled election is taking place in Ondo West LGA, results are anticipated from Owo LGA.
Twelve political parties participated in the elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions held on Saturday.
Before the election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) declared its decision to withdraw from participating, citing a lack of faith in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission’s ability to conduct a fair and credible election.
The 12 political parties participating in the election are: Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, and Labour Party.
Other parties include the National Rescue Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.
Before the poll on Saturday, the most recent council election in the state took place on August 23, 2020. The elected council officials served until their tenure ended on August 22, 2023.
Since that time, civil servants, particularly the Heads of Local Government Administrations, have been responsible for managing the administration of the state’s 18 council areas.
After multiple delays, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission ultimately scheduled the election for January 18, 2025.
