APC supporters in Bayelsa State have urged the party’s national leadership to take into account nominating David Lyon, a past governor-elect, as their candidate for governor in the state’s next election.
The National Working Committee, NWC, of the APC was cautioned by the Stakeholders’ Forum to be careful with the conduct of its governorship primaries in Bayelsa on April 14. The statement was signed on Monday and submitted to Obasanjonews24 by its Coordinator, Gift Ebiki.
The majority of APC members and the majority of Bayelsans, according to Ebiki, want Lyon to fly the party’s banner, but they are concerned that, if the primary election is not properly run, it may be rigged by unpopular, desperate contenders.
He said that majority of the contenders vying for Lyon’s spot on the party’s slate were depleted forces and spies for the Bayelsa State Government.
According to Ebiki, the APC should, in the interests of justice, equality, and good conscience, provide Lyon the first offer of refusal given Lyon’s resounding electoral victory in the most recent election, in which he thrashed the PDP but was denied the opportunity to lead the state by the Supreme Court.
According to Ebiki, “We are firmly certain that Chief David Lyon’s candidature would unquestionably deliver APC the well-deserved win in the next gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State.
“We urge the members of the party’s National Working Committee to keep in mind that several of the candidates vying for the party’s ticket have twice run for governor of the party, but have utterly failed.
However, a few of these candidates are supported by opposition parties in an effort to splinter the party, create disruption, and divert attention from the real issues.
“Chief David Lyon being the next governor of Bayelsa State under the APC will cause the APC to enter and spread throughout the area of the SouthSouth. Even before he entered the 2019 election, Chief Lyon was well-known among Bayelsa state’s residents for his straightforwardness, open door policy, and humanitarian character.
Ebiki claimed that Bayelsans were eager for good change in the state under Lyon’s leadership and that they were prepared and willing to reclaim the mandate that had been taken from them in 2019.
According to him, Chief David Lyon’s candidature shouldn’t typically be up for debate because the governorship candidates who competed and won for their various states in the APC at the same time as him in 2019 were awarded a second term ticket without any resistance.
“At this point, it is crucial to emphasise that Chef David Lyon was not to blame for the Supreme Court’s decision to reject his candidature for president in 2019. Instead, the nomination process was poorly conducted and sabotaged by some of the candidates.
Chief David Lyon is the lifeblood of the APC in Bayelsa state, the APC National should keep in mind. As a result, it must make prudent choices that would ensure the party’s well-deserved win in the next Bayelsa State gubernatorial election.
