The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a strong rebuke against former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent critique of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies and handling of the coup d’état in Niger Republic. Obasanjo specifically highlighted Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira as contributing factors to inflation and increased food prices, impacting the general population negatively. Despite acknowledging the necessity of these policies, Obasanjo criticized their flawed execution during a colloquium in Abuja focused on Nigeria’s economic challenges and security issues.
During his address, Obasanjo pointed out that the government’s decisions, including subsidy removal, exchange rate adjustments, and intervention in the Niger Republic coup, were essential but poorly implemented, resulting in economic hardship for Nigerians. This public criticism marked the first time Obasanjo openly disapproved of Tinubu, whom he did not endorse during the presidential election.
In response to Obasanjo’s remarks, APC National Director Bala Ibrahim dismissed the former president’s comments, insinuating that Obasanjo might be displaying signs of senility. Ibrahim expressed his respect for Obasanjo but suggested that his recent criticisms were indicative of senility setting in. Furthermore, Ibrahim accused Obasanjo of being a habitual critic, targeting various leaders since his unsuccessful bid for a third term in office, including Presidents Buhari and Jonathan. Ibrahim emphasized that Obasanjo’s criticism of Tinubu was not an isolated incident, highlighting a pattern of consistent attacks on leaders in positions of authority.
Ibrahim also expressed disapproval of Obasanjo’s administration, accusing him of mishandling the Nigerian economy. He stated that Obasanjo’s leadership was not successful and even led to the fragmentation of the economy.
The APC representative supported Tinubu’s initiatives to enhance the economy, contending that Obasanjo’s continuous criticisms of leaders indicate a belief that he alone knows what is beneficial for Nigeria. Ibrahim emphasized that no one possesses exclusive knowledge or leadership approach, implying that Obasanjo has made mistakes in evaluating Tinubu’s strategies.
