The All Progressives Congress, or APC, in Rivers State has requested that a state of emergency be declared by the federal government in response to the political unrest in the state.

The call was made on Wednesday at a media briefing in Port Harcourt by Tony Okocha, the party’s chairman of the Caretaker Committee.

Siminalayi Fubara and the police are currently powerless in the ongoing conflict, according to Okocha, the state governor.

“There is war in Rivers State,” he declared. Furthermore, the dramatis personae accountable for the carnage that has claimed lives are known.

“Neither the governor nor the police can do anything. In order to control the chaos and rise occurring in the state, the APC in Rivers State is hence requesting the declaration of a state of emergency in the area. I urge the federal government to take swift action in this matter.

The state has reportedly been in a panic since Monday as a result of the 23 local government chairmen’ terms coming to an end, according to Obasanjonews.com.

The chairmen who support the state’s most recent governor, Nyesom Wike, disobeyed Fubara’s decision to leave their positions, arguing that the State House of Assembly had granted them an additional six months of tenure.

On Wednesday morning, the pro-Fubabara lawmakers, led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, vetted 23 temporary chairmen who had been proposed by the governor.
