The event took place at a structure constructed during the Soviet era on Sakhalin, a sizable Russian island that borders Japan.
According to Valery Limarenko, the regional governor, a gas explosion that tore through a five-story apartment building on Sakhalin Island, Russia, on Saturday resulted in at least nine fatalities.
Sakhalin, which has a population of around 500,000 and is located north of the Japanese region of Hokkaido, is wedged between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.
The event happened in Tymovskoye, a tiny town.
Videos taken on the site demonstrate how the bomb completely demolished several apartments.
In a post on his Telegram channel, Limarenko stated that four children were among the casualties.
