Nigeria now has one confirmed instance of the deadly zoonotic illness anthrax, according to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Dr. Columba Vakuru, the Federation’s Chief Veterinary Officer, revealed this in a statement he released on Monday.

He claimed that the case was narrated on a private property in Niger State’s Suleja Local Government Area.

He said that the disease-exhibiting animals were the reason the case was initially reported on July 14.

The farm has been placed under quarantine, according to the vet officer, after a lab test revealed the condition.

According to Dr. Vakuru, “to this end, the federal and the Niger State governments have taken measures to ensure that the outbreak is controlled and contained quickly in Nigeria.”

He claims that the federal government also declared that preparations were being made for a nationwide campaign to immunise cattle, sheep, and goats against anthrax.

The Vet Officer continued, “Surveillance of anthrax will be increased on livestock farms, markets, and abattoirs.”
