Anger among students led to the Nasarawa University stampede – VC, Bala Mohamed
The impatience of the students has been identified as the cause of the stampede that occurred at Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
According to reports, the incident took place when the students, along with some hoodlums, rushed to grab bags of rice that were donated by the state government to alleviate the economic hardship being faced.
The bags of rice were stored at the institution’s convocation square, awaiting distribution by the governor.
However, as the governor was yet to arrive, the students and hoodlums forcefully entered the square and began looting the rice, resulting in a stampede that led to casualties.
In response to the incident, Prof. Suleiman Bala-Mohammed, the Vice Chancellor of the university, expressed disappointment in the students’ lack of patience during the distribution process.
He emphasized that the government’s gesture was meant to provide relief to the students, but their impatience caused the unfortunate incident. Bala-Mohammed assured that an investigation will be conducted to gather all the facts and information surrounding the incident.
He also urged other students to focus on their academic activities, maintain peace, and adhere to regulations to avoid further trouble.
