Anambra State has finally announced the date for its local government election, the first in 10 years.
On Saturday, 28th September 2024, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) will be conducting local government elections in Anambra State as per their announcement.
The upcoming local government election in the state will be the first one held in more than ten years.
On Monday, ANSIEC Chairperson Genevieve Osakwe issued a circular announcing that the upcoming election will be the first one to take place since January 2014. This was during former Governor Peter Obi’s tenure.

Subsequently, caretaker committees have been appointed by successive governors to manage the 21 local government areas in the state.
After Governor Charles Soludo inaugurated the ANSIEC, elections were announced as a result. It seems that this decision was prompted by a recent Supreme Court verdict affirming Nigeria’s 774 local governments’ financial autonomy.
The ruling guarantees direct allocation of funds from the Accountant-General of the Federation to these establishments and allows for federal government withholding from committees under caretaker management.
Starting Wednesday, ANSIEC headquarters in Awka will have more information available on the election timetable and schedule of activities, according to Genevieve Osakwe.
