Anambra boat mishap: NIWA verifies the deaths of eight individuals and successfully saves 38 passengers.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed that a boat accident in Anambra State resulted in the death of eight individuals, with 38 others being rescued.
This contradicts the initial report from the Anambra State Police Command, which stated that five people had died and 30 had been rescued. Alhaji Jibril Darda’u, the General Manager of Corporate Affairs at NIWA, expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and prayed for their souls to rest in peace.
The incident occurred between Thursday and Friday in Umumu Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area, when a wooden engine boat collided with an obstacle in the water channel and capsized. The boat was carrying 50 passengers and was traveling from Idah in Kogi to Onitsha in Anambra.
