The Anambra State Assembly has amended the Local Government Law, reducing the tenure of local government officials to 2 years, aiming to enhance governance and accountability.
The State Electoral Law in Anambra has been amended by the House of Assembly for the third time this year.
On Thursday, the amendment was passed during plenary which stipulates that Local Government Chairmen and Councillors shall hold their tenure for a maximum of two years.
To prevent any loopholes in the future and maintain transparency within the local government system, Obi Nweke – Chairman of House Committee on Public Petitions stated that an amendment was imperative.
An Anambra State Electoral Law No. 3, 2024 will become effective on September 12th of the same year – only sixteen days before the planned local government elections scheduled to take place on September 28th, in accordance with official reports.
Under the new law, both local government chairmen and councillors will now hold office for a two-year term. This marks a significant departure from the earlier legislation that only mandated limits on the chairman’s and deputy’s tenures.
Section 110 of the Principal Law will now include a new sub-section 4 which states that the local government council shall be dissolved two years after its inauguration.
