A commercial Gulf car with the licence plate DKA 555 XF collided on Thursday in Sabon Gaya, Kakau axis, resulting in at least six fatalities along the Kaduna-Abuja route.
The vehicle apparently lost control and hit a concrete barricade in the collision, which happened at 7 am.
Kabir Yusuf Nadabo, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna State Command, confirmed the tragedy and said the victims’ bodies had been sent to the mortuary of St Gerald Catholic Hospital in Kakuri, Kaduna South LGA.
Insisting that speeding, losing control, and a tyre blowout were to blame for the accident, he urged drivers to drive carefully.
The sector commander was particularly concerned that the bulk of highway crashes happened between 4 and 6 in the morning and 8 and 10 in the evening, when commercial drivers were driving heavily loaded cars and mistakenly believed that there were no FRSC personnel on the road.
“In order to avoid regrettable events like the one we saw, the FRSC and other advocates for road safety have repeatedly advised drivers against setting up unauthorised detours. It is absolutely tragic. We hope that this demonstrates the value of patience, particularly on the Kaduna-Abuja section of the road that is undergoing restoration, he said.
He sent his sympathies to the families of the victims of the unfortunate but preventable catastrophe.
