The Labour Party’s (LP) Peter Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church International, also known as Winners Chapel, had a discussion that was recorded and later leaked. The Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, responded.
During the chat, Obi was overheard pleading with Oyedepo to assist him in winning the support of Christians in the South-West and Kwara State.
Also, he claimed to have met with the Olofa, who according to him informed him that no presidential aspirants had ever paid him a visit.
Oyedepo is a native of Omu Aran, Irepodun local government area of Kwara State, which shares a border with Offa.
When Oyedepo questioned Obi on his chances in the Middle Belt generally and the East specifically, Obi responded, “East is alright, Middle Belt is okay, but states like Kogi, Kwara, and Niger are problematic.
“I travelled to Kwara and met Olofa of Offa, who informed me that nobody had ever been here, with you no difficulty but the Christian community in Kwara and Niger, and I am also working in Kogi in the same way.”
Yet in response to the scandal that has sparked fury across the country, Olofa said that his name had been “wrongly connected with the political mudslinging and intrigues.”
“Our attention has been drawn to a leaked audio conversation between General Overseer of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) Bishop David Oyedepo and Labour Party Presidential Candidate His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, which is making the rounds on the internet, and the insinuations from the so-called “exclusive” tape where the name of our royal father was mentioned and incorrectly associated with the political mudslinging and intrigues.
“It is important to note that the throne of Offa Kingdom is a holy and respected stool that should not be profaned on the altar of political gamesmanship and misinformation.
“The Olofa of Offa, a well-respected first-class king in Kwara State, is father to everyone, regardless of your religious, racial, or tribal colouring.
He has an unquestionable passion for the prosperity of our beloved nation as well as its unity and peace. We officially denounce this malicious and naughty narrative intended to defame the respected stool that serves as the Ibolo Kingdom’s administrative centre and ask the public and pranksters to stop immediately from careless manipulation of the truth and misinformation.
HRM Oba Mufutau Muhammad Gbadamosi Ajagungbade I Esuwoye II declared in a statement that he “has always welcomed everyone to his realm regardless of their position with open arms and felicitations, and will continue to do so.”
