The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, refuted any allegations of misconduct in the redesign of the country’s currency, the Naira, in 2022.
Emefiele entered a plea of not guilty to the four charges brought against him in front of Justice Maryanne Anenih at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, located in Maitama, Abuja.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused Emefiele of initiating the Naira redesign without the necessary approvals from the CBN Board and the then President, Muhammadu Buhari.
The charges included unauthorized printing of new Naira notes, causing harm to the public, and withdrawing funds from the Consolidated Revenue Fund without proper authorization.
Despite the accusations, Emefiele denied all four counts and his lawyer, Mahmud Magaji, SAN, successfully secured bail for him under similar conditions as previously granted by Justice Hamza Muazu.
