Former Central Bank (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, entered a plea of not guilty on Friday in response to the amended twenty-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges now include various allegations such as criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit felony.
Despite being on bail, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court granted Emefiele permission to travel outside of the FCT, with the exception of leaving the country.
The Prosecution’s counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, did not object to the continuation of Emefiele’s bail.
The trial judge, Justice Mauzu, granted the request for bail and adjourned the case to February 12 and 13 for further proceedings. Initially, in August 2023, the Federal Government had filed a six-count charge accusing the former CBN governor of fraudulent procurement.
