In a deadly collision involving a Mitsubishi Bus (L300), which happened on Sunday at around 1200 hours along the Eket-Oron road, two people have been reported deceased and one injured.
This was stated in a letter addressed to Sector Commander Mathew Olonisaye and signed by Paul James, the Federal Road Safety Corp’s Public Enlightenment Officer in the Akwa Ibom State.
In order to prevent similar road accidents, especially during this rainy season, the statement, which claimed that the disaster was caused by over-speeding and route violation, warned drivers against reckless driving.
The statement reads, in part, “A tragic crash involving a Mitsubishi Bus (L300) with registration number JJJ24XB and a Hyundai Accent with registration number JJJ773FQ occurred on Sunday, August 13, along Eket-Oron road at about 1200hrs.
“Of the three male adults involved, two were confirmed dead and one was injured.
When FRSC personnel arrived at the crash site after learning about the event, they mobilised, took the injured to a nearby hospital for quick medical assistance, and deposited the dead in the mortuary.
“It was discovered after further investigation that the crash’s primary factors were eyewitness reports of speeding and a route violation.
The road was cleared of barriers to allow free passage of traffic after the casualties were immediately transported to the hospital, according to Olonisaye.
Olonisaye described the collision as a regrettable incident that might have been prevented if the motorists had complied with traffic laws instead of abusing the use of the roads.
In order to prevent such occurrences of road carnage, the sector commander stated that the Corps would continue to educate and sensitise drivers about safe driving practises.
As any life lost cannot be regained, he cautioned all road users from doing any such activities that have the potential to jeopardise their own safety.
The sector commander emphasised the need for drivers to be safety-conscious, warning them against excessive speeding, distracted driving, nighttime driving, driving while intoxicated, and failing to obey traffic signs.
He sent condolences to the deceased person’s family and wished for the injured person’s swift recovery.
