In the past three months, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Akwa Ibom Command, has arrested 60 drug suspects and gotten 11 of them convicted.

The data were provided by Mrs. Obot Bassey, the NDLEA commander in Akwa Ibom, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Uyo.

Bassey says that in addition to the 11 convictions, a number of cases are still open and are being prosecuted at different stages in court.

She argued that, particularly during this holiday season, efforts must be made to raise awareness of the destructive effects that drug usage and illegal trafficking have on young people and society.

“From September until now, we have seized over 150 kg of drugs and medicines.

“We have detained almost 60 people, and no fewer than 11 have been found guilty.” Similar to this, over 42 drug suspects received counseling, while over 10 others received rehabilitation.

“We are doing a lot of sensitization.” Yesterday, I was with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) educating the church about the risks associated with the newest opioid to hit the market, called fentanyl. It is an opioid and is intended to be used during surgery to treat severe discomfort, according to Bassey.
