Akwa Ibom has confirmed four cases of Monkeypox. Stay informed on the outbreak and health measures being taken in the region.
Samuel S. Etuk, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer of Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health has confirmed that from January to August 2024, there were four cases of Monkeypox reported in the state.
At the Media Partnership Strengthening and Review Meeting held in Uyo, it was announced by Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria.
According to Etuk, there are three male victims in different local government areas – Uyo, Nsit Ubium and Onna. The affected individuals range from 2 to 15 years old.

Etuk emphasized the significance of preventive measures such as practicing regular hand hygiene, seeking prompt medical attention upon experiencing symptoms, and refraining from self-medication. He also mentioned that there are presently four confirmed cases in Akwa Ibom which have been appropriately handled to date.
Additionally, he clarified that the Mpox virus has the potential to spread from animals to humans and between humans via direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or lesions.
Etuk emphasized the significance of exercising caution when it comes to physical contact and placing high relevance on practicing personal hygiene due to the absence of a definite cure for the virus.
Etuk urged journalists to disseminate knowledge about Monkeypox, emphasizing that their impact can surpass the efforts of health authorities.
