A military base in Mali’s capital has been attacked by gunmen, forcing the closure of the city’s airport. Read the latest updates on the security situation.

In a bold move, armed attackers stormed a military police base located in Bamako, the capital of Mali. The incident occurred early Tuesday and led to intense gunfire and explosions that prompted authorities to close down the city’s international airport for some time.

According to sources, witnesses, and an AFP correspondent, the assault commenced at approximately 5 a.m. as evidenced by black smoke emanating from near the airport.

At least one military police base was confirmed as a target by an anonymous police source, but the assailants remain unidentified.

During early morning prayers, witnesses reported being trapped in a nearby mosque due to the attack that caused widespread panic.

As a safety measure, the Bamako airport was closed temporarily with no information provided on its duration. Consequently, due to the instability, French High School Liberte decided to shut down and United Nations Mission in Mali recommended that their personnel restrict their movements.

Since experiencing a series of coups in 2020 and 2021, Mali has been under the control of a military junta while grappling with armed rebel factions. These groups include separatists as well as jihadists who have ties to both Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

Despite Bamako being mostly untouched by attacks, this assault indicates a rise in violence.

Mali has recently adjusted its alliances by shifting towards Russia and the Wagner mercenary group for backing under Colonel Assimi Goita’s guidance, while distancing itself from previous colonial ruler France.

Although the military and its Russian allies have launched offensives against northern rebels, they vehemently deny allegations of committing human rights abuses against civilians.
