The Attorney General of the Federation-designate, Lateef Fagbemi, attended the hearing of the Abia State governorship election tribunal in Umuahia, which has angered the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State.

Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, who has previously had Senate clearance, is a member of Governor Alex Otti’s legal team, the opposition party claimed in a statement by Abraham Amah, Vice Chairman Abia North.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate Okey Ahiwe filed a petition challenging the declaration of Alex Otti as the victor in the Abia 2023 governorship election, and the Abia PDP asserted that before being named the AGF, Fagbemi served as the lead attorney for Otti and the Labour Party.

As a senior lawyer, Mr. Fagbemi should have known that after being nominated, vetted, and appointed as the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, he should no longer appear in court for cases in which he has personal interests, such as the case of Alex Otti and the Labour Party.

“His appearance in the tribunal yesterday acting as a personal attorney for a private petitioner demonstrates a terrible and dangerous misunderstanding of the significance of the elevated position he is to occupy and raises questions about his comprehension of the weight and significance of that office.

In order to postpone the “pronunciation of justice,” the opposition party said that the Labour Party, which is in power in Abia State, was using panicky tactics and pointless obstructive resolutions.

The Abia PDP stated that it was disappointed in Lateef Fagbemi, the incoming attorney general and minister of justice, for his alleged act of partiality.

However, in response to the PDP’s alert, a top-ranking member of the Labour Party from Ohafia, Kalu Udensi, claimed that the umbrella party was anticipating losing the tribunal case, which is why it saw the need to issue a fake alarm to preserve its face.
