Issa Muhammed, who had only been working three days at a vehicle wash in the Isheri neighbourhood of Lagos State, was detained by members of the Lagos State Police Command on suspicion of trying to steal and sell a Toyota Camry that had been provided to him to wash.
On Sunday, September 9, it was reported that members of the Rapid Response Squad captured the suspect.
The suspect had already removed all identifications identifying the car’s owner when he was apprehended by the RRS squad, according to state police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin.
The 22-year-old suspect was detained as he went to meet a bidder to sell the car in the Agege region of the state, according to the superintendent of police.
“The suspect, Issa Muhammed, was arrested on Sunday, September 9, 2023, in the Agege neighbourhood of Lagos State where he had parked the car to connect with a buyer,” the statement said in part.
The owner had given the suspect the car three hours earlier in anticipation of a family outing later that afternoon, according to preliminary findings.
“Mohammed, who had started working at the car wash three days prior to the incident, had taken off the car’s licence plate and thrown away all identifications tying the vehicle to its owner as soon as he arrived in Agege.”
