After Ukraine claimed to have retaken Kherson, the first significant metropolitan centre to fall during Russia’s incursion on February 24, Kyiv said on Saturday that the West was on its way to a “joint triumph” over Moscow.
In the meantime, London said that Russia’s “strategic defeat” in the important Black Sea port city would cast doubt on the purpose of the war in Russia.
When meeting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the margins of a Southeast Asian summit in Cambodia, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba remarked, “There were very few who believed that Ukraine would survive.”
“This is about to happen, and our triumph will be our win together — a victory of all nations that value peace in the globe.”
Blinken praised the troops and people of Ukraine for their “amazing courage” and promised that US assistance “will continue for as long as it takes” to fight Russia.
After months of hardship, the humiliating Russian withdrawal gave the Ukrainians a major lift.
Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, said that all annexations will soon be freed.
The Ukrainian national song played at Kherson’s main plaza while a small group of people gathered around a bonfire and sang along, according to a video posted on social media by Ukraine’s parliament.
President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a video on Telegram stating that “special units are already in the city” and showing what seemed to be Ukrainian soldiers assembling alongside locals.
