Modi gave Azali Assoumani, the president of the Comoros and the chair of the African Union, a hearty hug before beginning his speech.
On Saturday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially welcomed the African Union as a new member of the G20.
The bloc’s growth represents a significant diplomatic win for Modi, who will face national elections next year and has leveraged the forum’s hosting rights to enhance his standing as a world leader.
Modi gave Azali Assoumani, the president of the Comoros and the chair of the African Union, a hearty hug before beginning his speech.
“India proposed that the African Union be granted permanent membership in the G20. In his opening remarks to the summit, Modi stated, “I think we have everyone’s agreement on this.
He then slammed a ceremonial gavel, saying, “With everyone’s blessing, I request the head of the African Union to take his seat as a permanent member of the G20.”
Then, at the invitation of S. Jaishankar, India’s minister of international affairs, Assoumani sat down with other world leaders.
Members’ strong disagreements over the Ukraine war have made it more challenging in recent years to reach accord.
In his opening remarks, Modi stated that there is a severe problem of trust in the globe.
“The war has widened this gap in trust. This crisis in mutual trust can be resolved if we can beat Covid.
