Three African migrants who were stowed away on a ship’s rudder are rescued by the Spanish coastguard.
The Canary Islands-bound ship came from Nigeria, according to the Spanish coastguard, and had three migrants stowed away on its rudder.
The three stowaways can be seen sitting on the rudder of the oil and chemical tanker Althini II in a photo posted on Twitter by the coast guard on Monday.
According to the ship monitoring website Marine Traffic, the Althini II landed at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on Monday following an 11-day journey from Lagos, Nigeria.
The coastguard reported on Twitter that after being brought into the port, the migrants received medical attention.
The Canary Islands, which are held by Spain, are a well-liked entry point for African immigrants trying to go to Europe. According to Spanish data, maritime migration to the archipelago increased 51% in the first five months of the year over the same period last year.
