Nigeria’s Ese Brume secured the gold medal in the women’s long jump competition at the African Games by achieving a remarkable 6.92 meters jump to successfully defend her title in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Thursday evening. She had previously claimed the championship in 2019 in Rabat, Morocco, and maintained her exceptional performance five years later in Ghana.
Brume’s initial jump was sufficient to earn her the gold medal on the same night that her fellow Nigerian athlete, Prestina Ochonogor, also secured the bronze medal with a jump of 6.67m. Koala Marthe from Burkina Faso took home the bronze medal. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing outcome for Nigeria’s Ruth Usoro, who finished in fourth place with a jump of 6.62m.
Apart from the long jump, Nigeria showcased its prowess in other events on Thursday. Obiageri Amachi clinched the gold medal in the discus throw with a personal best of 58.93m on her final attempt, while her compatriot Chioma Onyekwere claimed the silver medal.
In the women’s heptathlon, Kemi Francis-Petersen secured the silver medal with 5268 points, coming in second behind Ahouanwanou Odile from Benin Republic.
