African countries pledge to eradicate AIDS among children by 2030

On Wednesday, twelve African nations outlined their strategies for eradicating childhood AIDS through a variety of HIV testing, treatment, and preventive initiatives.

The 12 nations represented in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, unanimously supported the 2030 objective, which UNAIDS announced last year.

Tanzanian Vice President Philip Mpango said during the conference that “all of us must have a role to play to stop AIDS in children.” “The year 2030 is right around the corner; we cannot be complacent.”

At the inaugural ministerial gathering of the Global Alliance to Eliminate AIDS in Children, which brings together the 12 nations with UNAIDS and other health organisations, the Dar es Salaam Declaration was made public.

The new strategy calls for expanding treatment for HIV-positive pregnant women, screening young children early, protecting breastfeeding mothers from infections, and removing gender and rights-based barriers that prevent people from accessing services.

“A winnable battle”

Winnie Byanyima, the executive director of UNAIDS, said at the gathering that she was encouraged by everyone’s commitment to the 2030 target.

“It’s a fight that can be won,” she remarked. It’s a battle for our kids,

“Your leadership is important,” World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the ministers.

He asserted, “We have everything we need to make this a reality, but we need your dedication and effort.”
