The Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere made a significant change on Wednesday by abolishing the positions of Acting Leader and Deputy Leader. Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who previously held the role of Acting Leader, was removed from his position during the group’s monthly meeting at Reuben Fasoranti’s residence in Akure, the capital of Ondo state.
In a statement released by Comrade Jare Ajayi, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere Worldwide, it was announced that a new elders council consisting of 21 members was established, with Reuben Fasoranti appointed as the chairman.
Representatives from various state chapters of Afenifere were present at the meeting, as stated in the communique. During the meeting, a motion was put forward by Dr. S. J. Ibikunle from Ogun State to abolish the positions of Acting Leader and Deputy Leader, which was seconded by members from Ekiti, Kwara, Oyo, and Ondo States. The motion was unanimously approved by the general house.
Consequently, the Leader declared that the responsibilities and authority of advising the Leader of Afenifere and Asiwaju Yoruba would now be vested in the newly constituted Afenifere Elders Caucus, which includes prominent members such as Chief R. F. Fasoranti, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, HRM Oba Olu Falae CFR GCON, and other distinguished individuals.
The Nigerian security architecture was a key topic of discussion during the meeting, with the group emphasizing the need for a rework to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
They proposed the establishment of police services at the state and local government council levels to combat kidnapping and banditry.
Additionally, the recent blast in Ibadan highlighted the importance of federating units having control over mineral resources, particularly mining and exploration, to prevent similar incidents.
The urgency for restructuring Nigeria was also emphasized, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu being urged to initiate the process.
The establishment of a Nomad Vigilante militia by Miyetti Allah Hore was deemed inappropriate by Afenifere, and they expressed hope that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda would address key issues such as strengthening the Naira, reducing energy costs, and ensuring regular electricity supply.
The high cost of living was also a concern, and the Federal Government was urged to take actions to strengthen the value of the currency, enhance productivity, and reduce costs of items and services to alleviate inflation and improve the welfare of the people.
Lastly, the meeting called on Yoruba-speaking states to promote the teaching and usage of the Yoruba language in schools, suggesting that it be used as the medium of instruction at lower levels of education and made compulsory for students at the school certificate examination level.
Parents and guardians were also encouraged to teach their children the language and promote its usage in both verbal and written communication.
Following the conclusion of the meeting, The Leader emphasized the importance of commitment to the core values of Afenifere and the embodiment of Omoluabi ethos by its members as they continue to promote the organization in their respective states.
Additionally, he expressed his prayers for the success of the government at all levels, aiming to enhance the quality of life for the people.
