Mali emerged victorious in their Africa Cup of Nations opener against South Africa, with goals from Hamari Traore and Lassine Sinayoko securing the win.
The first half saw missed opportunities, including a penalty from Percy Tau that sailed over the crossbar. However, Traore capitalized on a rebound from Sekou Koita’s free kick that hit the woodwork, while Sinayoko found the back of the net six minutes later.
This victory adds to Mali’s previous wins against South Africa in 2002 and 2013. Currently leading Group E, Mali will face Tunisia in their next match.
South Africa made a promising start to the match, causing early problems for Mali with their speed. In the 18th minute, they were awarded a penalty after Sikou Niakate was deemed to have fouled Evidence Makgopa in the box following a VAR check. However, Al Ahly forward Tau missed the penalty, sending his shot over the goal.
South Africa’s lack of attacking finesse continued to hinder them, with Mali goalkeeper Djigul Diarra making routine saves to deny them. Just before halftime, South Africa had a lapse in concentration at the back, allowing Sinayoko to have a clear chance on goal, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was quick to react and cleared the danger. In the second half, Mali dominated the game against a fatigued South African side that struggled to create chances. The closest South Africa came to scoring was in the last minute when Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick hit the post.
Mali, ranked 51st and considered dark horses in the Afcon tournament, will face Tunisia in their next match, while South Africa will take on Namibia, who have several players from South African clubs in their squad.
