Akohona Makalima, a referee from South Africa, is scheduled to make history as the first female official at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Confederation of Africans (CAF) has selected Makalima as one of the referees to officiate at the 2023 AFCON finals.

The 35-year-old is among Africa’s most well-known female referees.
Since 2014, she has been listed with FIFA.
Makalima participated in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 officiating pool, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The arbiter graduated from King Hintsa FET College with a national diploma in human resource management.
