In the Group D game in Bouake, Aston Villa’s Traore, who is currently on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir, scored in added time to secure the victory.
Mauritania, making their third appearance at the tournament, had two opportunities in the first half but were denied by Burkina Faso goalkeeper Herve Koffi.
Despite their efforts, Mauritania’s goalless run since 2019 continued as Koffi also denied Sidi Amar in the second period. The game’s first chance fell to Mauritania’s Koita, but his shot was saved by Koffi. Burkina Faso had their first shot on target later in the game, but Niasse made a comfortable save.
Mauritania came close to scoring with a free-kick, but Koffi tipped the ball over the bar. Burkina Faso had their chances as well, with Traore’s curling strike being saved.
