A civil society movement called Rescue Edo Movement (REM) has argued for electoral revitalization and fairness for all candidates running for governor of Edo in 2024.

Hon. Andrew Emwanta, the former Commissioner for Communication & Orientation and convener of REM, made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja during a press conference.

According to Emwanta, Edo has encouraged good-hearted men and women to lead the populace; as a result, conditions must be such that everyone has an equal and fair chance of achieving success.

“We’ll look for someone who can help Edo State overcome its current growth-stunted situation. “Electoral renaissance in Edo is long overdue,” he declared.

Additionally, he stated that the major political parties’ primary candidates for governor shouldn’t be chosen primarily based on factors such as ethnicity, senatorial district, or other divisive beliefs.

He urged state citizens to demand the human quality index, arguing that they shouldn’t give up the governorship to a certain zone in 2024.

Nonetheless, Emwanta pointed out that the state’s three zones have produced governors without experiencing any kind of marginalisation.

Additionally, it stated that the state should not be bound by the flaws of the past and that citizens should take all constitutional steps to free the state from “the jaws of those who have swallowed it up.”

The former commissioner also urged relevant authorities and interested parties to make sure that legitimate candidates’ goals are not undermined by undemocratic means.

It is important for all of us to highlight ability, skill, and heritage. These and other factors ought to help us decide wisely in 2024,” he remarked.

Governor Godwin Obaseki, who was initially elected by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2016 and later switched to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was reelected in 2020.

The governorship election in the state is scheduled for September 21, 2024, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
