Adeyanju writes to the Chief of Army Staff, asking to keep soldiers in barracks on August 1. Discover the details of his appeal.
During the August 1 nationwide protest, Deji Adeyanju – an activist lawyer – called upon Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, to instruct soldiers to refrain from leaving their barracks.
According to Adeyanju, the measure would ensure that there is no recurrence of the tragic EndSARS incident whereby protesters lost their lives.
Dated July 30, 2024 and addressed to Lagbaja, he communicated his decision via a letter.
The heading of the correspondence reads as follows: “Appeal to confine Nigerian Army Men within Barracks during Planned National Protest in 2024.”

Adeyanju states that a letter has been sent to the Chief of Army Staff requesting soldiers remain in their barracks throughout the protest, with intentions to prevent any similar incidents from occurring as was witnessed during EndSARS.
As a law firm that advocates for human rights, we feel compelled to bring to your attention the disturbing actions of Nigerian Army men who are attempting to quell the August 1st, 2024 national protest in various cities across the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
It is the Nigeria Police Force’s responsibility to ensure internal security, including safeguarding protesters during their planned demonstration, rather than that of the Army.
We implore you to return your troops to the barracks with the understanding that we do not desire a recurrence of protesters being slain by soldiers, as we observed during EndSARS.
