Adeleke’s advice to corps members: have a positive impact on your host community
Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has urged corps members to have a positive influence on the areas where they are staying and to accept their postings to their primary assignments sincerely.
Affirming his administration’s efforts to make the Osun Orientation Camp the best in the nation and committing to support the programme going forward, Governor Adeleke also gave the corps members assurance.
During the passing out parade and closing ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC Batch B Stream II sent to Osun State and those expelled from Lagos State, Adeleke delivered this charge in his deputy’s place, Kola Adewusi.
Adeleke asked the corps members to respect the customs and culture of their host communities.
“I urge you to accept your assignments in good faith and to be committed to have a positive impact on the host communities. Remember that although if your primary assignment may seem far away, previous Corps members have been there in the past, and others are still there today, each giving their own share to the growth of the local community.
“Your services are eagerly needed by the good people of the State. Don’t deny them the services you can provide by only looking for jobs in big cities. A rural area once existed in every urban city.
“I command you to respect the customs and cultures of the locals in your host communities. Don’t disparage their way of life; instead, become a part of it by relating to its issues and goals. Get rid of your biases against people of different races and religions, and make an effort to coexist peacefully with them. You will enjoy residing among our friendly, loving people, I can assure you of that.
To lessen the impact of the removal of the fuel subsidy and the increase in the cost of living, the Osun NYSC State Coordinator Agbor Ndoma Obim earlier in his speech asked for an upgrade review of the corps members allowance.
Agbor urged the corps members to participate in projects that will leave a long-lasting impression in their host communities in addition to advising them to avoid being absent from and tardy for work.
