Acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General Oluyede, visits Sokoto to address rising security concerns following reports of a new terror group. Get insights into his mission and potential security measures.

Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, has arrived in Sokoto for his first operational visit to the 8th Division’s Area of Responsibility.

In the northwestern state, he is anticipated to visit the Sultan of Sokoto and engage with other relevant stakeholders within the 8th Division Area of Responsibility.

He planned to take advantage of the opportunity to speak to the troops involved in Operation Fasan Yamma, who are combatting terrorists in the northwest region.

Oluyede’s visit follows the Defense Headquarters’ confirmation, three days prior, of a new terror group called ‘Lakurawa’ emerging in Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Five local government areas in Sokoto State are confronting the threat posed by a new terrorist group called the Lakurawa.

Major General Edward Buba of Defence Media Operations stated that the new terror group is intensifying insecurity in the North-West region. However, he also emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are already taking steps to contain them.

Troops are facing a new terrorist group in the North-West called the Lakuwaras. This sect is linked to terrorists operating in the Sahel, specifically from Mali and Niger Republic.

General Buba stated, “They initiated incursions into the northern region of Nigeria, focusing primarily on Sokoto and Kebbi states. As I mentioned earlier, they entered from the Niger and Mali axis.”

He mentioned that the new terrorist group originated from Mali and the Republic of Niger following the coup, which resulted in a collapse of military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

The military has announced that nine terrorists are wanted for their involvement in the security issues affecting the nation.
