The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the country’s joint umbrella body of labour unions, have agreed a truce, which has been supported by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).
This was said in a statement by Prof. Tukur Muhammad Baba, the forum’s national publicity secretary.
The organisation issued a warning against accepting out-of-context public policy solutions in their entirety and without imagination, as is advocated by international financial organisations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The statement added that Southeast Asian countries emerged from the economic crisis of the 1980s and 1990s by primarily rejecting, not by following, the policy recommendations of the multilateral organisations.
While expressing sympathy with organised labour, the ACF stated that it had been worried that a protracted strike would put the already vulnerable inhabitants of the North in danger twice over.
