It was discovered that the dangerous gang and security personnel engaged in a bloody gunfight that lasted for several minutes, ending with the kidnapping kingpin and two other members of his group being slain at around 1:40 am on Friday.
The Nigeria Police Force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed this to reporters on Friday during a press briefing at the IRT headquarters in Guzape, Abuja.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Adejobi clarified that some of the bandits were the ones terrorising Bwari, an outskirt of Abuja, as well as the states of Kaduna and Nasarawa.
In light of the recent establishment of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), the senior police officer emphasised that this was yet another important step in strengthening the security environment in the Federal Capital.
Security personnel would not back down when sifting through bushes and shantytowns in border areas between the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kaduna, and Nasarawa states, a police spokesperson said.
“At roughly 0140 hours on Friday morning, DFI-IRT agents confronted some bandits in the axis in a hard gunfight and eliminated three of them, including Mai Gemu, also known as Godara, the leader of their gang.
Without holding back, we can declare with certainty that the gang and its camp have been destroyed. Adejobi informed reporters at the briefing that “the gangs and many others who venture into crime and kidnapping in Bwari, border communities linking to the Kaduna axis would never know peace as our concentrated efforts are being intensified.”
With their recent operations, bandits attempted to infiltrate the security architecture of the nation’s capital, as reported by Obasanjo News24. Several people of settlements on the outside of the Federal Capital Territory were kidnapped, and some of them were killed.
Adejobi hss disclosed that on January 24, several individuals who were allegedly providing ammunition to terrorists were captured on the Abuja-Kaduna route.
He stated that after the groups of people were intercepted, DFI-IRT intelligence agents were travelling along the Abuja-Kaduna motorway.
The senior police officer specifically mentioned that they were thought to be significant providers of weapons and ammo to bandits that were active in Niger State, Zamfara State, and Kaduna State.
“The suspects confessed to the crimes upon their arrest and subsequent interrogation,” he continued. Ibrahim Hussaini, one of the suspects, is being held while the other two are guiding the IRT agents to their hiding places where they keep their weapons before distributing them.
