In a tragic incident on Saturday, a two-storey building next to Cupid Hotel on Sultan Dansuki Road in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, collapsed, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation.
Four individuals have been successfully rescued from the rubble up to this point.
Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, the Acting Director of the FCT Emergency Management Department, has confirmed the rescue efforts in an official statement.
She mentioned that the department was notified by onlookers and a distress call received at 6:45 am through the 112 emergency toll-free number.
“Two of the rescued victims have been taken to Kubwa General Hospital for medical treatment. The search continues to find any other individuals who might be trapped in the building,” Wenegieme explained.
Various agencies, such as the FCT Emergency Management Department, National Emergency Management Agency, FCT Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, the Civil Defense Corps, and the Nigeria Police, are actively participating at the site.
The building, which consisted of 45 self-contained apartments, was initially a hotel before being transformed into a residential complex.
Wenegieme stressed the dedication to persist with search and rescue operations until it is confirmed that no one is left trapped. She also advised developers to strictly follow building codes and avoid using substandard materials to prevent similar incidents.
The rescue teams are still present at the location, working tirelessly to ensure the safety and recovery of any remaining victims.
