Abia Reports First Case of Mpox, Sparks Panic
Abia has reported its first case of Mpox, leading to widespread panic. Learn more about the situation and the response from health officials.
The Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area in Abia State has recorded the first case of Mpox, prompting a swift response from the state government which established a treatment facility located in Aba’s Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH).
During a press briefing that followed the weekly meeting of the Executive Council in Umuahia, Okey Kanu, who serves as the state’s Commissioner for Information disclosed this information.
He stated that among 13 individuals suspected of having the disease, only one received a positive test result while nine tested negative and two are currently awaiting categorization. It is fortunate to note that there have been no reported fatalities related to this occurrence.

Kanu stressed the possibility of setting up more treatment facilities in case of a wider spread, although the state’s main objective is to impede further transmission. He encouraged locals to observe proper personal hygiene and social distancing protocols – especially in locations where suspected cases abound.
Agozi Azodo, the Governor’s Health Special Adviser, emphasized the significance of maintaining regular hygiene to thwart infections.
He urged locals to limit contact with animals as well as refrain from self-medicating while also advising them to immediately inform their nearest health facility in case of any desired incidence.
