The alleged murder of a schoolboy by a security task team in the state of Adamawa is the subject of an investigation launched by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
The teenager, Abdullahi Abba, also known as Abdallah, was allegedly tortured by members of Operation Farauta, a task group of military and police troops tasked with reducing crime throughout the state.
After receiving care in the hospital for many days, Abdallah, who had allegedly lost consciousness as a result of the abuse, passed away on Wednesday, August 9.
The task force received a complaint from a neighbour on August 5 regarding a lost phone, which the neighbour claimed he suspected the youngster of stealing. He was then arrested and subjected to horrific torture.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri instructed the state commissioner of police to look into the circumstances surrounding Abdallah’s death, as was communicated to newsmen on Friday.
The governor’s response followed suspicions that Operation Farauta personnel may have tortured Abdallah to death and are attempting to cover up the case, according to a statement signed by Fintiri’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou.
The statement read, “Governor Fintiri, who expressed regret over the regrettable occurrence, has ordered the Police to launch an intensive inquiry into the matter in order to take up the case against individuals involved if anything untoward is uncovered.
The governor is requesting serenity as an inquiry is proceeding, the statement reads.
According to the statement, the governor expresses sympathy for the bereaved family and assures them that every Adamawa citizen’s life is valuable and that the government will work to see that justice is served.
