The children of former Nigerian military ruler, General Sani Abacha, have spoken out in defense of their father’s legacy following renewed debates over his leadership and policies.

Sadiq Abacha, the son of late Nigerian military leader General Sani Abacha, has expressed public admiration for his father’s leadership. Despite ongoing criticism, he maintains that his father’s legacy continues to endure.

In a recent social media post, Sadiq stated that his father frequently faced envy and covert betrayal. However, he expressed confidence that history would ultimately recognize him as a more effective leader than his critics imply.

Sadiq wrote, “Abacha — the man they privately admired. Despite their attempts to damage your reputation, history will recall your leadership fondly. As your son, I feel prouder than ever today. You are a figure many aspire to emulate.”

He ended his post with a Hausa proverb: “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,” which means, “Whoever throws a stone in the market…”

His comments emerged only a few days following the release of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s (IBB) memoir, which has ignited intense public debates.

The book reexamines the contentious annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Babangida admitted that MKO Abiola had won and expressed regret over annulling it. He claimed internal pressures led to this decision, supposedly spearheaded by Abacha without his awareness.

Abacha, Nigeria’s leader from 1993 until his death in 1998, continues to be a controversial figure. He is recognized for implementing various economic reforms and strengthening national security; however, his regime is also linked with accusations of corruption and human rights abuses.

In a similar vein, Gumsu Abacha, daughter of the late General Abacha, posted a cryptic one-word reply directed at IBB on her social media: “Weakling.” Additionally, she shared posts suggesting that Babangida had portrayed Abacha unfavorably and was capitalizing on the fact that he could no longer defend his own legacy.
