According to military officials cited by the news agency Yonhap, an F-16 fighter jet operated by the US Forces Korea (USFK) crashed on Monday morning during a training exercise over the Yellow Sea.
The event occurred at approximately nine in the morning local time off the western coast of the nation, close to the North Jeolla Province city of Gunsan, according to the report. The warplane’s pilot ejected and was saved at sea. It took some time for an official confirmation of the news to surface.
About thirty F-16s are a member of the US 8th Fighter Wing, which also includes South Korean military hardware at Kunsan Air Base.
This is the second similar event of the year; in May, an F-16 flown by the US crashed close to Osan Air Base in the nation’s northwest. The US military reported at the time that the pilot, who was taking part in a training exercise, had safely ejected and been rescued.
