A “drunk” soldier kills army general in Lagos

Brigadier General O.A. James, one of the best officers in the Nigerian Army and the director of finance for the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), has passed away.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the top army commander passed away on Tuesday night from wounds sustained when a car driven by a corporal named Abayomi Ebun, who is thought to have been intoxicated, struck him.

Tuesday night at approximately 10:30 p.m., Brigadier General James was on his way to his apartment inside the NAFRC barracks in Lagos when the event occurred.

One of our sources claimed, “The general was walking to his residence inside the Barracks when he was attacked and pushed down by the inebriated soldier.”
The soldier struck the senior officer while driving carelessly and is a resident of the barracks.

After the event, the General was taken to the NAFRC Medical Center where his demise was verified.

Since his arrest, the army corporal has been held by NAFRC provost marshals who are looking into the incident.

The army of Nigeria has not yet responded to the event.
Onyema Nwachukwu, a brigadier general who serves as the Force’s spokesperson, did not respond to queries for comment and has not yet done so.

Brigadier General James held a top position in the Nigerian Army Finance Corps up until his death.
He held accounting bachelor’s, master’s, and MBA degrees in addition to an M.B.A. in Finance.

He belonged to the Chartered Institute of Taxation (ACTI), the National Institute of Management (NIM), the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), the Nigerian Institute of Directors (MIoD), and the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) (mni).

He received the Meritorious Service Star (MSS) and the Pass Staff College decorations (PSC).

The Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, where Brigadier General James worked until his death, is a tri-service facility tasked with preparing military soldiers for retirement into civil life by teaching them in one or more professions.

According to the defense headquarters, the Center’s goal is to make it easier for military retirees to transition into civilian life.
