The Lagos Ministry of Health has reported a cholera outbreak in Lagos State, resulting in 15 deaths and 350 suspected cases. The state has confirmed 17 cases of the disease.

Professor Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, discussed the strategies being implemented to address the outbreak. He mentioned that 350 suspected cases have been identified in 29 wards across different local government areas, with 17 confirmed cases and 15 fatalities.

In a statement released by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Abayomi stated, “Although there was an initial rise in the number of cases, we are now observing a decrease in affected areas due to our intervention efforts. However, new cases are emerging in previously unaffected regions, highlighting the importance of maintaining strict hygiene practices.”

The commissioner emphasized that laboratory tests have revealed the Cholera sub-type O-1, which is known for causing severe illness. He stressed that the distribution of new cases varies by location and that the state’s continuous surveillance is crucial.

To combat the outbreak, Lagos State is conducting inspections of facilities, providing cholera kits, and distributing Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) in health facilities. Public health education campaigns are also being intensified.

Abayomi urged residents to follow precautionary measures, collaborate with health authorities, and engage in community sanitation activities, particularly with the upcoming Eid-al-Adha celebration. He also highlighted the importance of promptly reporting symptoms like watery diarrhea or vomiting to prevent further spread and ensure timely treatment, which is available free of charge at government facilities.
