Abdullahi Yahaya and Abduljabar Jubril, two haulage drivers, were charged on Thursday in a Lagos Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly diverting N54 million worth of spaghetti.

Yahaya, 48, and Jubril, 39, are accused of conspiracy and theft on two counts; their addresses were withheld.

The prosecution, led by Insp. John Iberedem, informed the court that the two perpetrators had committed the charges in Lagos on February 17 and 18, 2024.

Iberedem claimed that on February 18 at Shagamu Road, the two were given the responsibility of transporting a shipment of 4,725 spaghetti packets worth N54 million.

“They stole the same property belonging to IOS Global Logistic Ltd., diverted it, and conspired with others at large,” he claimed.

He clarified that when the commodities did not arrive at the purported designated as anticipated, the fraudulent act was uncovered.

According to Iberedem, the offence violated Sections 287(9) (b) (c) and 411 of the Lagos State, 2015 Criminal Laws.

If found guilty of stealing by agents, etc., and if the offender obtained the stolen item with a power of attorney to dispose of it, Section 287(9) stipulates seven years in jail.

The accused were granted bail in the amount of N3 million apiece, with two sureties in an equivalent amount, by Chief Magistrate Mrs. E. Kubeinje.

She declared that in addition to an oath of verification and evidence of tax payments, the sureties had to be gainfully employed.

The case was postponed until June 26 by Kubeinje for discussion.
