One of the five emirates impacted by the recent revocation of the Kano Emirates Council Law, Gaya, has seen protests in its streets.

The law that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II was removed from office in 2020 by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje was recently reversed by the House of Assembly, which is led by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The governor also directed the rulers to hand over power to Deputy Governor Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, including Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Emir of Gaya.

The deposed Emir quietly left the palace on Thursday after midnight, according to local reports. There were no indications of violence or opposition, and the town remained peaceful with armed security guards keeping the peace.

Abubakar Shuaibu, a local, pointed out that some people in the community weren’t happy with the modifications.

Residents were demonstrating against the disintegration of their emirate in the streets by Sunday morning as a result of their unhappiness.

Following his approval of the repeal on Thursday, Governor Abba Yusuf declared the dissolution of the four other emirates that Ganduje had established: Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi.

With signs and anti-government slogans in hand, the demonstrators charged that the administration had political intentions when the emirate was dissolved.
