The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, recently delivered a speech at Harvard Law School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, where he expressed his support for the implementation of a parliamentary system of government in Nigeria.
Obi highlighted the shortcomings of the current presidential system, stating that it has resulted in the country being governed by ineffective leaders who are not held accountable for their actions.
He emphasized that under a parliamentary system, a motion of no confidence can be moved against a leader within a shorter period of time, ensuring that ineffective leaders can be swiftly replaced.

Additionally, Obi pointed out that in a parliamentary system, the president would be a member of parliament and would be required to answer questions during designated sessions, eliminating the need for hired spokespersons.
He stressed the importance of the president being directly answerable to the people who elected him, rather than isolating himself from accountability.
