The Sokoto State government has announced that out of the 745 vehicles believed to be in the possession of former government officials, 70 have been successfully recovered.
Alhaji Jelani Kalgo, the Chairman of the Committee for the Review of Wasteful and Unnecessary Government Assets, presented the interim report of the committee to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, revealing that the committee had identified a total of 745 vehicles. Of these, 302 were found to be in the possession of former Commissioners, Special Advisers, and Chief Executives, while the remaining 443 were in the possession of local government areas.
The committee has managed to retrieve 32 vehicles from former government officials, including Commissioners, Special Advisers, and Chief Executives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
During their investigation, the committee discovered that 70% of the 443 vehicles in the local government areas were no longer functional. Additionally, they found that around 40 vehicles had been leased to private individuals.
The vehicles recovered so far include graders, pay loaders, rollers, tippers, water tankers, fire service tankers, and others.
The committee has invited all stakeholders, including local government chairmen, works supervisors, and beneficiaries, and has successfully retrieved 35 heavy-duty vehicles. However, the recovery efforts have been hindered by a lack of funds and the absence of a court order.
The committee also uncovered a case where a government property was sold for N60 million, but only N30 million was accounted for. Governor Aliyu expressed his gratitude to the committee for their diligent work and assured them that the government would carefully review their report and take appropriate action.
