A 60-year-old woman named Hauwa Nelson appeared before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, Adamawa State, where she confessed to causing multiple injuries to a 9-year-old girl named Merable Nelson, whom she had adopted.
As a result of her admission, the court decided to detain Hauwa. The incident occurred on the 24th of last month when Hauwa allegedly beat Merable several times with a cable wire, accusing her of eating her cooked macaroni.
Hauwa was charged with three counts, including cruelty to a person, indecent treatment of a child, and voluntary causing of hurt, which are in violation of sections 209, 210, and 220 of the Penal Code Law 2018.
During her arraignment, Hauwa pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her by the Adamawa State Police Command.
The police were informed of the incident on March 27 by the Adamawa State Social Welfare Office, three days after it occurred.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Zakka Musa, Hauwa physically assaulted Merable, resulting in injuries on her back and other parts of her body.
Following Hauwa’s admission of guilt, the prosecutor requested an adjournment to call a witness to corroborate the plea.
The court granted the request and scheduled the next hearing for April 22, 2024, while ordering the defendant to be remanded in prison custody.
