Tragedy in Ogun as a 51-year-old American returnee is discovered dead in a hotel. Authorities launch an investigation into the incident.
Sunday Abioye, a 51-year-old who recently returned from America, was discovered deceased in a hotel room located in Sagamu within the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was reported that his body was found in a lifeless state in his hotel room near the GRA area of Sagamu on Wednesday.
Omolola Odutola, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, has affirmed this development through a statement released in Abeokuta, the state capital.
She explained that a man named Mr. Oluwole, the Chief Security Officer of the hotel, reported to the police about discovering a deceased customer.
She stated that upon receiving the report, a team of detectives visited the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered that the deceased’s body had already been placed in a car outside the hotel and was being prepared for transport to the morgue by his family.
According to the police spokesperson, Jimoh Godday, who lives in Imota Lagos State and is the brother of the deceased, reported to the police team that his brother had returned to Nigeria from the USA on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
She elaborated that Godday mentioned he had visited the hotel on Monday and knocked on room 109, where his brother was staying. After receiving no response, he asked the manager for a spare key to enter the room. Upon entering, they discovered his brother’s lifeless body inside.
“Photographs were captured, and a variety of drugs and traditional medicines were retrieved from the room,” she stated.
The middle of the bed was drenched with a liquid-like substance. Ogunmonti Ogunwole, a friend of the deceased, verified that he had gone with his friend Sunday to buy nine different types of medication the day before because Sunday had complained about feeling unwell.
The body has since been transported to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Morgue in Sagamu for an autopsy.
“The cause of death is still unknown, and the case will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation,” concluded the police PRO.
